Last known letter from Sgt Cooper before his death.

Last known letter from Sgt Cooper before his death.

This is a letter written to his sister, Lily (May) Cooper at the Nurses Home, City General Hospital, Sheffield.

Although the text of the letter shows no date, only "Mon night", the vague postmark indicates it was franked on the 24 th of July, 1942.

Monday night would have been the 21st of July, so it could have been posted the 22nd or 23rd, before Eric took off on his fateful mission of the night of the 23rd of July, 1942, to meet his untimely death on the 24th.

Here is a transcript of the letter:

"Stradishall
Mon.night

Dear May,
just a few lines in answer to your letter of the other day. I've been off flying for the past 48 hrs. with a sore throat, but am O.K. again now. You'll know by now of course that I was posted from my crew last week, well much to my horror and dismay I learned they went down at Kiel on Saturday night, it's the first thing thats shook me really properly since I've been in the air force, I can hardly beleive it as I'm writing to you. I can gaze out of my window and look down upon miles and miles of rolling parkland, it's a most lovely place. I'm fortuneate to be here, it's a huge country mansion about 3 miles from camp, I spend all my time here, I'd like to stay for the duration.
Now I must write home I expect, so for this time
Cheerio
and all the best
from
Eric"
