P.O.W. Diaries 1945 April 06 1945 J.H.Hallam Stalag VIIIB

Friday April 6 1945

Crossed Elbe.

I did not sleep well, bed was far too hard. We were out on the march by 8 o'clock. Pouring with rain, quite a miserable day. Passed through some very hilly country. I was really too foot sore to appreciate the scenery fully. After what seemed endless kilometers we are now at our destination, it is a new camp, quite a number of French conscript labour here too. It seems strange to have a bed to sleep in again, even if the straw is rough and damp. We have a brew of tea, there is talk of a stew coming up later, hope so.

Editors Note:

This is Kónigstein Work Camp.  ( see map )

May also be spelt 'Koenigstein'.
